A bonus is only worth what its terms let you keep. The headline figure - a big match percentage or a pile of free spins - is marketing; the value lives in the wagering, weighting and cashout rules beneath it. This guide, written by Elena Marsh, a senior iGaming analyst with nine years spent reading bonus terms, explains how to judge a promotion on its mechanics rather than its number.
LuckyThorne has not published its specific bonus offers at the time of writing, so the figures below are general or clearly labelled illustrative. Always read the actual terms on the operator's own promotions page before opting in.
## Common bonus types
Most casino promotions fall into a handful of shapes. Knowing the category tells you where to look for the catch.
- **Welcome / match bonus** - the casino matches a percentage of your first deposit with bonus funds (for example, a 100% match doubles the amount you have to play with, up to a stated cap). The match rate and the cap are the two numbers that matter.
- **Free spins** - a set number of spins on named slots, usually at a fixed spin value. Winnings are almost always paid as bonus funds with their own wagering, not as cash.
- **No-deposit bonus** - a small amount of bonus money or spins granted without a deposit. These carry the strictest wagering and the lowest max cashout, because the casino is giving something for nothing.
- **Reload / cashback** - ongoing offers for existing players: a reload matches a later deposit, while cashback returns a percentage of net losses over a period. Cashback that pays as real cash with no wagering is rarer and more valuable than cashback paid as a bonus.
Every figure attached to any of these - match rate, spin count, cap - is subject to the operator's terms. T&Cs apply, verify on operator site.
## Wagering requirements (the key number)
Wagering (also called playthrough or rollover) is how many times you must bet the bonus before you can withdraw anything from it. It is written as a multiplier such as 30x or 40x, and it is the single figure that most often turns a generous-looking offer into a poor one.
Here is a worked example - illustrative only, always read the specific offer:
> A £50 bonus with 35x wagering means 50 x 35 = £1,750 must be staked before the bonus and its winnings become withdrawable. At £2 per spin, that is 875 spins of turnover.
Two things change how that multiplier bites:
- **Bonus-only wagering** applies the multiplier to the bonus amount alone (the £50 above). This is the player-friendlier version.
- **Deposit + bonus wagering** applies it to the deposit *and* the bonus combined. If you deposited £50 to claim that £50 bonus, 35x on £100 is £3,500 of turnover - double the work for the same headline number.
Always check which base the multiplier uses, and remember the 35x figure above is not a LuckyThorne term - it is there to show the maths. T&Cs apply, verify on operator site.
## Terms that change an offer's value
Beyond wagering, a cluster of secondary terms quietly decides whether a bonus is realistic to clear. Read all of them before opting in.
- **Game weighting** - not every game contributes 100% to wagering. Slots often count fully, while table games and live casino may count 10% or less, or nothing at all. A high multiplier on slots-only weighting is very different from the same multiplier where roulette counts too.
- **Max bet while wagering** - a cap (commonly a small per-spin limit) on how much you may stake until wagering is met. Exceed it and the casino can void the bonus and any winnings, even accidentally.
- **Time limit** - bonuses expire. A short window forces higher turnover per day, which raises risk; a longer one lets you play within your normal budget.
- **Max cashout** - a ceiling on what you can withdraw from a bonus, especially no-deposit ones. A big win capped at a low figure means the rest is forfeited.
- **Eligible and excluded games / payment methods** - some slots are barred from bonus play entirely, and some deposit methods (often e-wallets) are excluded from qualifying for the offer.
These conditions vary between promotions at the same casino, so treat each offer on its own terms. T&Cs apply, verify on operator site.
## How to judge a promotion
Work through a short checklist rather than reacting to the headline:
1. Multiply the bonus (and deposit, if the terms say so) by the wagering multiplier to see the real turnover.
2. Check game weighting against the games you actually enjoy - a slots-only requirement is irrelevant if you prefer live tables.
3. Confirm the max bet cap and set your stake below it before you start.
4. Divide the turnover by the time limit to see whether clearing it fits your normal budget and pace.
5. Look for a max cashout, particularly on free spins and no-deposit offers.
If the maths only works by playing faster or staking higher than you comfortably would, the sensible move is to skip the bonus and play with your own funds instead. A bonus is a chance to extend play, never a way to make guaranteed money - the house edge still applies to every wager, bonus or not.
When you are ready to compare the current terms yourself, go to the source.
